Planning on getting married abroad? The experts at Thomson Weddings can answer all your destination questions!

  1

“We want an overseas December wedding in the sunshine!”

You could opt for somewhere in magical Mexico for your wedding abroad. They benefit from sunnier climes when we are feeling the chill in the UK. Mexico is a great place to start your research too – it’s the perfect place for a wedding while you bask in the December heat. Most of the weddings there take place on the beach, so think feet in the sand, sea breeze in your hair and you’re not far wrong. If you want a beach that’s as high shine as your engagement ring, choose Cancun Beach – the sand’s made up from fossil fragments that lustre when they catch the sun.

Alternatively, enjoy a Mexico wedding in the Riviera Maya, while wild dolphins swim in the water just a short distance away. Honeymoons in Mexico are amazing, too – you can take speedboats out to desert islands, snorkel together in coral reefs, and hike rainforest trails. In the Puerto Vallarta region, on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, tying the knot is just the start of a long list of once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Between October and March, humpback whales are regulars in Banderas Bay, and you can take a boat out to see them!

“We want to marry in an old chapel in Europe – nothing long haul!”

There are a few destinations in Europe without the hefty price tag or a long flight time, such as Ibiza or Italy, which are just over two hours from the UK. However, if it is an old chapel you are looking for then the perfect place is Cyprus. Religious ceremonies are legal here and recognised in the UK, meaning you can swap your vows in the old chapel you have always been dreaming of.

You can’t get older than Ayia Kyriaki Church, also known as St. Paul’s Pillar. It dates all the way back to the 12th century. Built in pale stone, it’s hung with icons and shining chandeliers, so the inside feels very sacred. What’s more, there’s room for 180 people inside and the stonework keeps the interior refreshingly cool on hot days. It is only a stone’s throw from the harbour as well, so perfect to have your wedding breakfast at sea on board a luxury yacht or one of the seaside tavernas.

If you aren’t too worried about your ceremony actually being inside, then take a look at Malta. You can say ‘I do’ in the grounds of a restored 14th-century farmhouse or beneath a gilded chandelier in the ballroom of an 18th-century stately home. Plus you have the added benefit of a short three-hour flight time from the UK. Perfect!
